I have this theory that it’s the purists who really enjoy their art the least.
You know, like the fanatic Star Wars friend who loves Star Wars so passionately that he hates all the movies but two?
Or the Tolkein fan who’s so dedicated to every word written in the books that he can’t stand to watch Peter Jackson’s movies?
Everyone has their own opinions about art—that’s great. That’s part of what makes art interesting because beauty is in the eyes of the beholder and each beholder is unique. But if we’re looking for perfection in books, films, or the translation of a book into a film, we’re not going to get it. We live in an imperfect world.
So maybe—shockingly—let yourself appreciate the imperfect. Don’t limit your joy with some false idealization of artistic perfection that doesn’t exist.
The purists are really missing out.
Now excuse me while I go watch the Hobbit movies and thoroughly enjoy them.
