For my part, I was a Romantic before I was a Christian; I became a Christian (and a Catholic at that) upon understanding that the Gospel is the fulfillment of the Romantic promise. I repudiated nothing—merely progressed farther. So, the counter-genealogy you sketch here makes total sense to me.
