I believe your theories are likely correct— if any area has been the scene of terrible suffering, whether sickness, murder or war, the energy left behind is so strong in some places that the “template”, blue-print or however you’d call it, is burned into space-time somehow, and might often repeat itself many times, in the presence of witnesses, until the pattern of negative energy can be cleared.

But in these cases, thankfully, it isn’t that the Soul of the deceased is doomed forever to go through this pain and torment. It’s just basically like a video or movie, as you suggested, leaving its mark in the ether. Sometimes this would be silent, but noise isn’t outside the possibility either.

The same principle that applies for a haunted house where there is stagnant energy (disembodied laughter, crying, howls), I imagine would be the same for the imprint of long-ago warfare & technology. I think this could explain seeing phantom ships in the ocean too.
