How does this play out if you don’t believe in Josephus? Maybe both of them were modelled on somebody else. Also the Islamic stories, supposedly from several hundred years later have the same familiar ring to them. I suggest Greek but of course Greeks drew from around them as well. So others might suggest Mesopotamian, Egyptian or Persian. But I would posit that it was all through a Greek lens.
