I had a friend who bought a Puggle - a pug/beagle mix - on the assumption that the dog would share all the good qualities of each breed. Instead, the dog had all the health problems of a brachycephalic pug and the behavior problems of a baying beagle. Romantasy, in its current form, is the puggle of fiction writing. The romantic leads are copies of copies of photos of Rhett Butler. I also have a sneaking suspicion that the genre relies on fantasy world-building because the main plot driver - forbidden romance - is hard to situate in 2020s America. But in a fantasy universe, a highly-segregated and striated society run on the back of servant labor is acceptable, even exciting (the costumes! The exotic foods! The luxurious baths!).
