The app for independent voices

In less than 100 hours, Substack Notes will see yet another influx of new users, as all journalists and experts will lose their Twitter verification and all Twitter reply threads will now be headed up by Elon Musk fanboys willing to pay nearly $100 per annum for a now-meaningless emoji.

Twitter as a serious digital platform will end.

RETRO has published, for subscribers, a journalistic ranking of the Top 100 alternatives to Twitter, with (a) links to each, (b) a description of each, (c) a color-coded system to show which platforms are rising in public esteem and which falling (per major-media reporting and user reviews, not my own opinions, which are separate from this ranking), and (d) a listing of nearly 50 other Twitter alternatives (with links and descriptions) that have not yet breached the Top 100.

This is the only ranking of its kind in the world, and it is updated regularly—which I will tell you takes a lot of research and a lot of work.

New in this edition of this ongoing RETRO series is a critical new feature: a section that summarizes the big news in the social media space that is influencing some of the changes in rankings.

I hope you will subscribe to RETRO ($5) and check out this and all the other ongoing series there!
