Excellent review. “Queer coding” is tricky to navigate. Vito Russo’s book CELLULOID CLOSET was a big influence on my thinking about film. He pointed out how many “buddy cop” movies of the 70s and 80s included an over-the-top gay stereotype character, because the filmmakers wanted to reassure the audience: “We know you might be thinking these two main characters are gay, but THIS is what gay looks like.” I attended the BLUE CRUSH premiere in Westwood - and I remember the big highlight was a blue carpet (not red)!
