Someone I love lives deeply in the situation of “virtuous” living and the overlap of vaccine skepticism and germ theory skepticism. This person also became very ill last summer with a UTI (and I witnessed the delusions that came with that). When I later described the delusions and the serious illness to them, the explanation was that they “had a two day sleep and woke up feeling better.” Because sleep heals. Well, yes, it does; but so did the powerful antibiotics they gave you that saved your life while you were unconscious. Ever since my daughter was nearly killed four years ago from being hit by a car, I have lived with an understanding that anything can happen at any time to the human body. Does that make me unvirtuous and unmotivated? No. It makes me try my best each day (with less self-condemnation), savour life’s moments as often as I remember to do so, and continually reach out for community with my fellow humans.
