Thanks, Kathleen! I didn’t know how the heads of these departments were appointed—very interesting. The differences between the missions of National Parks, BLM, and National Forests is something the average American knows little about, and something I often lecture about, too. Visitors are often confused about which passes work in what areas, as well as what they are allowed to do in the different locations. I used this topic to my advantage in my novel Bear Bait, where a fictional section of land is being transferred from the National Forest to the National Park system to create a protected continuous wildlife corridor. Instant conflict! I was inspired by seeing a lot of “Government Land Grab” signs on the Olympic Peninsula of Washington State.
