As an RN in Seattle I make, what I consider to be, a good wage. Lots of friends/family encourage me to buy a house/condo and ask why I’m still working. I’m 67 but I’ve only been a nurse for 20 years. Before that my top income was 30k. And I’ve always been single so there is no second income, no second retirement fund, no pension at all, and there will never be an inheritance. My money guy says I can’t retire yet. And I live in an incredibly expensive city even though I’m in the suburbs. I rent the downstairs of a split level and it works out really well for me. I have been a homeowner in the past and I hated it. I don’t want that responsibility. My son is 28 and has a good job but I know he worries about my future. And I don’t want to depend on him although he says “Mom, I’ve always known you’ll be my burden.” He’s funny 😆 and I’m so grateful for him.
