I had an RNYGB in 2001, lost 210 lbs. (started at 360), and regained it all, plus more. Very, very ill with obesity-related disease processes, I began GLP-1s in 2022 at 405 lbs. I am 5’1”. Today, I weigh 125 lbs. and know this is it. I will not out-eat the medicine like I did the surgery. Food noise was insidious and the bully enticed me to eat teeny tiny portions continuously, 24 hours a day. I continued doing that until GLP-1s. I was eating 8000-10,000 calories a day when I started Trulicity (for a year), then moved to Mounjaro in Sept. 2023. I am in maintenance (for almost a year) on 15mg. Mounjaro and my life is incredible! Sooooo very different than I ever knew it could be. The Food Bully (as I call it… Food Noise is too benign) has shut up and I never have to fight not to eat anymore. My daily intake now is 1200-1400 calories a day. My labs are pristine!
All that said, I do believe there is a place for an RNY for those who had super obesity like I did. But I believe GLP-1s should be required post-op to kill the Food Bully. I believe that will create a success story that will last a lifetime.
Fantastic piece to share!!
