I realized I was trying to be so terse in my prose that the intended meaning of the passage became blurred.

Also, trying to be too succinct in dialogue can make it sound very unnatural. In natural speech, we tend to search for the right words before we stumble onto the ones that do the job.

A lot of writing advice says, “Avoid unnecessary words,” which is good advice—but sometimes, less isn’t more. More is more.
