I was aware of his early education with Prez’s dad, after reading Douglas Henry Daniels’s excellent bio. Prez’s dad was super impressive — in his monumental PBS series, “Finding Your Roots,” Dr. Henry Lewis Gates has often observed how rare it was for Blacks to have achieved the sort of education and ownership of property that Prez’s dad had so soon after Abolition, and in the era of serious Jim Crow. His parents, Prez’s grandparents, had been born into slavery!
