Chronic empathy has left people feeling hollow because of the performative angle associated with it. I've often noticed people who signal their empathy with every dialogue are often the worst offenders behind closed doors. People are pressured to show empathy towards social issues they may not care about, because you're pathetic if you're not empathetic.
The imposition of societal standards to conform to a certain benchmark of empathy is morality driven form of keeping up with the Joneses. Except, they are far more insufferable with their silicon sense of moral superiority.
