There’s actually an analogy with infectious disease here - we found variability in COVID transmission is driven more by variability in social contacts than variability in biological infectiousness (medrxiv.org/content/10.…). Although social contagion obviously has the wrinkle that adoption can require multiple exposures as baseline when behaviour costly (‘complex contagion’).
