For decades, Sweden sat on its moral high horse, lecturing white South Africans about how to run their country. We funded the ANC, smuggled money through our diplomats, and wagged our finger at apartheid-era warning signs that read “Caution: Beware of Natives.” How barbaric, we thought. How uncivilized. Now we’re in a position where we actually should put up our own warning signs. However we don’t. We just call them something different. Here’s what fascinates me about those old apartheid signs. We convinced South Africa to take them down. We applied pressure, funded opposition movements, and eventually got what we wanted. The end of segregation. What happened next?
