Something I wrote at 21 that still stirs my affections:
I like yellow taxis on rainy nights and 20 somethings learning the art of dinner parties. I like the way New York feels before 6 am and how the guitar sounds in the quiet of the afternoon. I like catching the hidden joke with a new friend and I like how everything changes after that. I like that a crush feels the same way in college as it did in first grade. I like that the kitchen is ground for sacred conversations and that living rooms were created for community. I like learning the piece of a person that gives reason to everything else. I like that knowing someone is a life long pursuit. I like waiting to say I love you even though I rarely do. I like that people always offer to help to blow up balloons and how it’s always more fun in a group. I like getting drunk with people who will one day love my kids. I like the person who starts cleaning before the party is over and I like the person who leaves the mess for the morning after. I like drinking grape juice from wine glasses and eating cereal from mugs. I like that I don’t love the same places I loved at 17 but that I still love the places I loved at 10. I like the scars on my knees and elbows that I never let heaI. I like that I’ve finally made peace with them.
