Hello, I’ve been thinking a lot about Ignorance and Want when teaching A Christmas Carol this year. It’s a bone - chilling moment. The story hit home more than ever, this year, with 40% of children in the UK living in poverty. Seeing The Old Vic’s production a couple of weeks ago was really poignant; the collection buckets for Feeding Britain were overflowing and have raised over a million pounds since the tradition started in 2017. The effect of the novel - famously causing a factory owner to give workers Boxing Day off, etc. - is still potent. This is literature, alive in the world, creating kindness - what a legacy.
