Really interesting. My introduction to Leibniz was through ‘Candide’ where he was portrayed as a fool, or a sort of self-help chancer: “the best of all possible worlds.” etc
But it was much later I realised that the joke only works because Leibniz mattered and that he was right about so much. In fact, I now think that Leibniz’s idea that nature is law-governed and optimisable is probably worth looking at again in an age of LLMs.
