Delightful read, professor. Glad you brought it to Mister Tooze. What a dumbass, we’re speeding to Götterdämmerung and he’s scolding YOU? Although you did not need to defend yourself or Tim & Marci with me, you of course ended up writing an excellent teaching piece that held my attention till the end. I’m beyond grateful and amazed by all three of you. I find it hard to believe you want to be associated with America AT ALL at this point… your belief and commitment dwarfs mine!

It nearly made me cry reading: U-Toronto / 80k students @ $5k per year vs. Columbia’s / 8k students @ $70k per year. How much better off the U.S. be with 10 times more citizens among us armed with good, liberal educations — in any and every subject!

Well I’m sorry for the attacks on you. I’m happy for Canada which now gets more of you. I aspire to become as good an American citizen as you are from beyond the border but I have little faith or warm feeling for my country right now and doubt that will be restored before I die. I still love the IDEAS of liberal democracy, knowledge, civil society and caring for my neighbors but all that’s hard to put in practice when dodging bullets and constant lies.
