Rarely did I fire someone because they lacked the skills to do the job. Rather, it was their unwillingness to learn and/or they did not want to receive feedback.

Skills are teachable.

But attitude is (much) harder.

I've seen talented people stall their career due to:

  1. Getting defensive over every conversation

  2. Not being open to feedback (guess what happens...people stop giving it)

  3. Assuming their already "great" and deserve the next role

  4. Being too "maverick" and not developing the leadership ability to elevate their teams and peers

When it comes to rising stars, executives do not expect perfection...

But they do expect coachability.
