The Many Meanings of Tarde in Spanish

The word tarde looks simple and that’s exactly why it can be confusing.

In Spanish, tarde has more than one meaning, and context does all the work.

Let’s break it down.

1. Tarde = late

This is the meaning most learners know first.

  • Llego tarde al trabajo. (I arrive late to work.)

  • Es tarde. (It’s late.)

2. La tarde = the afternoon

With an article (la), tarde becomes a time of day.

  • Trabajo por la tarde. (I work in the afternoon.)

  • Esta tarde voy al cine. (This afternoon I’m going to the movies.)

3. Más tarde = later / later on

Used to talk about something happening afterwards.

  • Hablamos más tarde. (We’ll talk later.)

  • Lo hago más tarde. (I’ll do it later.)

4. Tarde o temprano = sooner or later

A very common fixed expression.

  • Tarde o temprano lo entenderás. (Sooner or later you’ll understand it.)
