Hi, Jane - I recommend “A Woman in the Polar Night” by Christiane Ritter, first published in German in the early 1930s. This amazing woman, who lived to the age of 103, spent a year living in a tar paper shack above the Arctic Circle with no electricity, plumbing, phone, radio, or neighbors… A story unlike anything I have ever read. I think you’ll like it.
