A Connecticut jury has convicted journalist and blogger Paul Boyne on all counts in a highly controversial free speech prosecution that legal observers say could reshape the boundaries of online speech. Prosecutors argued Boyne’s blog posts about judges constituted a criminal “course of conduct” under Connecticut stalking statutes. The defense insisted the posts were harsh political commentary protected by the First Amendment and did not qualify as “true threats.” The verdict followed intense closing arguments and a sweeping 145-page jury instruction from Judge Peter Brown. Boyne’s legal team is expected to file immediate post-trial motions and appeals citing the Supreme Court’s decision in Counterman v. Colorado.
