Another problem is the internships required to make use of a major. Many "entry-level" positions require a year of practical experience. Here in Canada, we have a well-established co-op program that provides paid work experience between academic terms, but its availability varies between universities. The alternative, which seems more common in the United States, is an unpaid (or paid a nominal stipend) internship, which a student must have financial resources (likely from family) available to complete.
