This film goer thanks you for your weaving many fine threads that touch on the layers and tensions the movie explores. I was able as a reader to try out my ‘felt sense’ of the different spaces/narratives you presented. I particularly appreciated your explaining how this dreamlike film plausibly and viscerally tethered the story to an authentic historical context.
I have also enjoyed learning about the many “making of” Hamnet stories. My favourite was the genesis of the ‘outreaching hands’ in the closing scene. I think William would have approved that dramatic closing of the circle of human yearning.
You article made me picture ‘Hamnet’ as a glistening spider’s web waving in a breeze over a black hole in the ground where human spirits are willingly drawn by its beauty.
“The rest is silence”.
