Roughly 100 percent of the people who write about politics professionally live in large metro areas (most common) or college towns and attended selective colleges. That itself is an idiosyncratic life experience. But of course it doesn’t seem idiosyncratic because if you leave your hometown to attend a selective college and later get a white-collar job in a major metro area, you’ll spend your time surrounded by people who did the same.
