Major medical and mental health bodies say it lacks evidence of efficacy and carries serious risks of harm. The American Psychiatric Association says the practice rests on the assumption that diverse sexual orientations and gender identities are mental illnesses and concludes that conversion therapies lack efficacy and may carry significant risks of harm."
