As an Iowan who grew up about 600 miles straight south of Winnipeg and has lived in Canada for several decades, I would like to add a prelude to your story— the original bear cub was from White River, Ontario, and was taken to London by a Canadian soldier when he went off to WWII. When his troop was sent to the trenches, he sent his beloved bear named Winnipeg after his hometown in Manitoba to the London zoo.
