Make money doing the work you believe in

Tom, what a beautiful and important piece. Thank you for writing it.

Edna and Judy represent something we rarely see anymore, scientists who were so far ahead of their time that the field had to catch up to them rather than the other way around. The image of the two of them looking at the same illness from completely different angles and both being right is one of the most honest things I have read about how science actually works.

And thank you for calling out the psychoanalytic mafia. I know that phrase will make some people uncomfortable and good. The damage that generation of thinking did to our field is not abstract. It is measurable in lives lost. In people with serious mental illness who spent years on a couch being asked about their mothers while their brains were on fire. In the suicide deaths that happened while we were busy looking for insight instead of looking for effective treatment. In the decades we lost.

Science has moved. The understanding of the biological and social architecture of mental illness has moved enormously. And the conversation is finally starting to catch up, partly because people like you write about it with the authority and the honesty it deserves. That matters more than most people realize.

So thank you. For this piece and for the broader work. Edna and Judy would have approved.
