Professor Lessig, three things stand out from this.

First, the fireman analogy. They are trained (and culturally expected) to run into fires. For the cynic in me the politicians are percolated through a system that selects for the ability to raise money and "win". Nobody in that pipeline is ever selected for the willingness to lose their career over a principle. The system is actually designed to efficiently manufacture cowards and clever shape-shifters.

Second, the money. Money buys narrative. The entire fundraising machine exists because the channels for reaching voters are privately owned and charges market rates for access. Broadcasters charge campaigns to use public airwaves (airwaves the public owns!) so that candidates can perform the basic civic act of getting elected. And then the same broadcasters host the “debates”. The one moment where candidates are supposed to face real scrutiny and turn them into produced television events optimized for ratings, not understanding. The format rewards rehearsed soundbites and punishes complexity. The public gets a performance instead of a conversation. It looks insane and Kafkaesque, right? We turned democratic participation into a revenue stream for the companies that control the microphone in front of mannequins. And wonder why the microphone's owners have more influence than the voters.

Third, the recursive trap! The people who could fix this need money to access the narrative engine to win the elections that would give them the power to fix it. Every point of intervention is guarded by the system its trying to reform.
