Mohammad Al-Eisawi “Abu Nihad” no longer weeps only for his only son, who one day left to retrieve some clothes from their home in Khan Younis in southern Gaza and never returned, but also for the fate of his two daughters, whose lives were shattered twice by the war.
For more than 40 nights, Abu Nihad raised his hands in the middle of the night, praying for his son to come back alive, while displaced people around him listened to his choked sobs until dawn. But the ending was even more devastating when his son’s decomposed body was found near the house after he had been shot by the Israeli army.
The war did not stop at taking away his eldest son; it also stole the happiness of his two daughters. Both daughters got married during the war, but only months later, their husbands were killed by the Israeli army in separate incidents. They returned to their father’s home as widows, carrying two small children who only know fatherhood through photographs and memories.
From the intensity of grief and endless crying, Abu Nihad lost sight in one eye, while his second eye is now at risk if he does not receive urgent treatment and manage to travel as soon as possible.
This is not only the story of one man, but the story of an entire family consumed by war, grief, loss, and endless pain.
