I have been saying no for 22yrs. My 2 1/2 yr old son fell and hit his head on the concrete while playing. A bone in his skull had broken & they took him in to surgery & repaired it. Around 5am the next morning his monitors started going haywire. Later that day they tested him for brain activity by basically pulling him off oxygen to which his body responded by going into cardiac arrest and I had to watch them shock his heart. They said he was brain dead. They wanted me to donate his beautiful blue eyes & I flat out refused. I could not stand the thought of them cutting his eyes out. I said he was going back to God the way he came to me, whole. This ICU dr for the next 48hrs did nothing but make nasty remarks to me. All because I said no. He kept pushing me and pushing me to pull my son off life support. He derided me for calling a priest to have him baptized. I was not Catholic at the time but I did it as a gesture towards his paternal grandparents who were. This dr then derided me for wanting a few more hours to wait on my older brother to show up. He lived 2,000 miles away but not only was he on his way, he was literally pulling off the ramp into Champaign, IL where the hospital was. My brother had never seen Christopher & I wanted him to see him just once while he was still alive before he'd have to see him at his funeral in less than a week. For two days I had to put up with that jackass. Then when we did pull him off life support and I held him in my arms, they didn't even give 5mins to hold my son. As soon as they pulled his oxygen tube out it took less than two minutes to feel the life leave his body and then they whisked him away after shutting all the monitors off. I wish we'd had the internet like we do today but in 2004 it was still dial-up days, flip phones & no cells allowed in the ICU. I didn't known then what I know now. But after what he put me through just for saying no, I immediately went and changed my DL from yes to no. I want no part of it. That experience alone told me doctors can't be trusted.
