It’s fascinating that variolation is essentially the origin of modern vaccinology, IIRC rooted in centuries (millennia?) of tribal medicine, and while modern vaccinology has made great progress protecting billions of people from diseases, in its formality it’s lost the speed, local relevance and accessibility, and ultimately some of those functional benefits of its variolation origins.
