Another excellent essay, Matt! 👏 It is indeed a problem that most psychologists (myself included) grew up in a relatively safe bourgeois environment (though paradoxically many also carry the lingering effects of childhood trauma, aka “the wounded healer”). And so they tend to create a paradigm of a safe pacifistic world due to both ignorance and defense. This is why most therapists (and physicians) denied until quite recently the reality of widespread trauma and violence. If parents and teachers and therapists and clergy inculcate too much of a “safe world” paradigm, the shock of violence will be even greater due a lack of any degree of preparedness.
