Not Anglican myself, but I've seen the same problems in corporate confessions of sin between better and worse PCA settings. The sound ones will be targeted or general but hit hard notes and not pull punches. The less sound ones will include more language about God's goodness but less about human sin or soften it to brokenness or "not being a nice person" type stuff.

DO NOT SOFTEN THE CONFESSION OF SIN. It's one of the most liturgically cruel things one can do in my opinion, because it means what's supposed to be a dagger to the heart of the law of God becomes a small needle stick on your finger for a blood test. I don't need self esteem for the 1 or two minutes between the confession and declaration of pardon or absolution. I and everyone else really, really need to understand I (and they) have NO BUSINESS being in a holy place but my redeemer has invited me/them anyway because of His finished work.

Cheapen the Law and you cheapen the Gospel.
