The frightening moments were memorable, but what stayed with me was Emmett's relationship with his mother and the complicated emotions surrounding her death. The memories of her, especially the smaller everyday details, gave the story real weight. Excellent writing here! By the time the supernatural elements intensified, I was already invested in the grief at the center of the narrative. That combination made the horror feel earned rather than simply shocking.
