I live in Southwest Florida. There are few meaningful restrictions to building housing. Wanna build on Priority 1 panther habitat. No problem. Get a zoning variance from the county commission and you're good to go. There's plenty of building going on...an abundance one might say. Yet housing is still unaffordable. Contractors and investors do not want to build affordable housing. They want to build upper middle class housing. Also, the other side of the abundance argument is income. Wages suck here in Robert E. Lee County. Who wants to build housing that the average wage earner can afford in a low wage county?
