The comment you make about theology of the doxology becoming the dominant strain is so insightful, and I think it points to the 21st century Hillsong-ification of (literally, musically) pop-Protestantism. If the music of worship is shallow, dependent on charisma, and led by slogan, then of course our faith will be as well.

Raised as a mainline liberal Protestant, I was shocked by the sheer number of enthusiastically devout evangelical and/or nondenominational Protestants I met in college who had a shallow understanding of the Bible. These were adults trying to “save” my heretical soul, but thought Jonah was one of Jesus’ parables! No wonder so many, as they grow in circles outside their home church, feel they have been kept in the wilderness. No wonder so many go in search of something different. To be honest, most of these nondenominational churches look like pyramid schemes to me. They give a few (men) worldly riches, while harming many honest believers. And just like the leggings, their product falls apart after a few washes.

The Church, regardless of liturgy or creed, should be a place of Living worship. It is meant to spiritually challenge its members, to continue Christ’s work on Earth, and to hold each person in dignity and kindness. How many American churches do this? How much time and energy and MONEY is spent on altar call, and how much is spent on the soup kitchen? “They shall know we are Christians by our love” - do they?
