Thank you for this article. Hope Edelman will always be the light in my heart that she was when I discovered her book in 1998, when I was 28. It was the 10-year anniversary of my mother's death by suicide after a 15-year struggle with a mental illness she couldn't live with. The loss of her started long before her death. These many years later—and with the impactful resonance I receive in your article—I realize how much that loss etched deeper because of my nonexistent surrounding support system. My memoir, Living in the Long Shadow, publishing with She Writes Press Sept 29, explores all of this without ever naming it. Writing this book and reading this article you've written, I now have words for it, which helps me understand the full picture.
