What are your thoughts on counting syllables in haiku?

I recently began an exploration into haiku. I’ve gained a great appreciation for the form, and I recognize that Japanese haiku isn’t expressed with attention to syllables. Rather, it’s about capturing the moment with as few words and as much restraint as possible. Yet, for me, I enjoy the nuance and challenge of adhering to a “rule”—although I’m not my opposed to “breaking” it when the moment calls for it. Still, I find myself counting out syllables in the middle of the night or while I’m out for a walk, and haiku has become a favorite form for expressing an image or moment. Tapping out the beat makes it feel musical, and I like that quality in a poem.
