After many years in the trenches, I can attest to the tried and true reading strategies. Read to the children, teach phonics, sight word recognition and sit with them as they venture into literacy. Discuss the characters in fiction and the main points in nonfiction. Children who grow up in homes populated with readers are more likely to acquire a love of reading. Spare the teachers more professional development presented by “specialists” who haven’t a clue.
