Two thousand years ago, Peter said in the last days people will mock and ridicule those who look forward to the Second Coming. They'll say something along the lines of, "Oh Jesus promised to come back, did He? Christians have said that for almost 2,000 years now. Yet things are the same today as they've been for thousands of years" (2 Peter 3:3-4).
For years, I've heard people say something similar (even within bible study groups). But is it true? Absolutely not. For centuries, things were "the same today as they've been for thousands of years." But that's no longer the case. We went from the Wright Brothers to men on the moon in less than seven decades. After thousands of years of slow, incremental innovations in warfare, human beings are now capable of killing everyone on the planet in a single day. For much of human history, the fastest a man could travel on land was however fast a horse could run. Today? Cars and trains can travel hundreds of miles per hour, and in the air, we can travel many times the speed of sound.
Most importantly, today we see the signs Jesus and the prophets said to look for. Signs that indicate His return is near. Signs previous generations could NOT point to. And Jesus said, "When you see all these things taking place, you can know that his return is very near, right at the door" (Mark 13:29).
