Today was canvas stretching day and this is one of three 24” x 36 canvases I now have to work on. Stretching canvas is one of those routines that helps me think and gets me closer to the complete process of making a painting. I feel more connected to the piece because my hand has had some part in making the overall thing. It feels different when you buy a canvas and start right in on painting.
I do both: If I’m up against a deadline and working large, if I can afford it, I’ll buy canvases and jump right in on painting. Otherwise, I’ll go the route of stretching them myself, which is less expensive. Both ways are valid and everyone figures out the best way for them to get to where they need to be creatively.

I was also thinking about how I felt setting up for this time-lapse and how it felt different doing it to post here as opposed to Meta’s platforms. I distinctly remember how the hard turn towards pushing videos as a way of gaining “exposure” on IG made me feel. My reaction? “I’m not doing all of that”.
I did some of that, anyway. Didn’t do much of it because it was another distraction from my main purpose in the studio: making art
I made this one because I wanted to and didn’t feel that I had to for any reason. A very different place.
