RFK Sr. famously said that GDP “measures everything except that which makes life worthwhile”. The central goal of neoliberalism has been to monetize services that were previously provided socially at the family or community level. Instead of eating mom’s homecooked meal you go to a restaurant, instead of talking to women in your community you subscribe to a dating app, instead of kids playing outside with their peers they go to daycare or watch streaming services. All of these transformations boosted GDP while making us more miserable.
