Harris heads back to Howard to rally for abortion rights

Vice President Kamala Harris will head back to her alma mater Howard University tonight to rally with abortion rights groups in her first political event since President Joe Biden announced the launch of their re-election campaign this morning.

The rally comes after the Supreme Court blocked two lower court rulings restricting access to the abortion drug mifepristone while the Biden administration appeals the decisions.

What they’re saying: Planned Parenthood Action Fund President and CEO Alexis McGill Johnson on Tuesday morning told Supercreator that Harris’s visibility on abortion rights and the White House lifting her visibility as a key thinker and leader inside the administration can’t be underestimated.

“I think that the fact that she chose Howard, which is obviously her homecourt, but also the fact that she is fully kind of embracing her leadership around reproductive freedom and recognizing the fact that this is an issue that young people care about, Gen Z cares about, that young people of color care about,” McGill Johnson said. “I think that she represents all of that and is able to really seamlessly weave the kind of issues where freedom is at the core together. And that’s what really will resonate most with Howard students and I think it’s incredible.”

McGill Johnson added that what’s made the vice president such an effective advocate for abortion rights because she connects the loss of reproductive freedom with what’s happening with maternal mortality rates, what's happening with the loss of voting rights and our democracy being at stake.

ICYMI: Harris traveled last week to Reno, Nevada to discuss abortion rights at the University of Nevada, Reno, highlight the role of young leaders in the abortion rights movement and promote a constitutional amendment that would codify reproductive freedom in Nevada’s constitution that the state’s legislature is considering.
