Nothing is more important than honoring your body's need for care and rest. You owe no apologies, you are not disappointing anyone, we are grateful for your presence here but I am sure our main wish is your well-being. One detail you're ignoring is that many very wealthy people live in Los Angeles and built their wealth here. And they have a direct interest (often unrecognized) in the quality of life and infrastructure outside their walls. They also have interest in avoiding class warfare.

As you may know, I have spent a lot of time discussing this issue with Effective Altruists like Will MacAskill and Peter Singer. And, generally speaking, I agree with you (and them). The marginal dollar matters much more in Nairobi than in Los Angeles. However, I think it can be argued that human flourishing will not be best achieved by spreading all the wealth around equally, so that no place has a higher standard of living than any other (if such a thing were possible). Emotional maturity is letting people be wrong about you. It's understanding that their narrative has nothing to do with who you are.

Let them be wrong.

Let them project.

Let them guess.

Let them assume.

Here’s what I have trouble squaring about the kids and ultraprocessed food debate.

Should we serve kids healthier food, especially in schools? Yes!

But my school served us all ultra-processed sludge—pizza, chicken nuggets, fries, chocolate milk—and perhaps 3% of kids were obese.

I was 21 when I met my wife.

22 when I proposed.

I was 23 when we had our perfect summer wedding & honeymoon; in the woods, in a tent, next to a lake.

At 24, we each landed jobs, and had our first son.

At 25 we bought our first (and only) house.

Here's a novel idea. You don't need to tell Kamala things you think are wrong with her. Women have been listening to things you think are wrong with us for let's say 10,000 years. We're all topped up. Here's a novel idea. You can just love Kamala for what she is. You don't need to make a list. You can just love her and let her see the lo…

“Could we just settle down and have some compassion and respect for ourselves? Could we stop trying to escape from being alone with ourselves? What about practicing not jumping and grabbing when we begin to panic? Relaxing with loneliness is a worthy occupation.″ - Pema Chödrön

I think there’s a lot to be said for working quietly and generously, rather than seeking to be loud and ‘influential’ in this world. Tending to the quiet work feels really good right now.

You've heard the saying “when one door closes, another opens,” but this can also happen in reverse. When you touch a new way of being, old ways can suddenly become closed to you. Relationships may fall away, crutches may crumble, or the vitality may just go out of a thing. In these threshold times, it’s important to affirm the grief that comes with losing something you once really loved. But then remember: this change has come about because your call for more has been heard. Keep courting those…
