Raymond Chandler describes his writing process as “throw up into your typewriter every morning. Clean up every noon”.

How do we understand this in terms of the mental filter we learned about in this post? What he’s doing here is he’s not trying to calibrate his filter at all. He’s letting everything through, and then with conscious awareness he picks through it. This is a perfectly valid approach to writing, many great writers do this.

It’s important to recognize this as just another way of working with this mental filter that pervades all our thoughts, whether you’re doing creative work or driving, or deciding what to say next in a group conversation.
