I grew up poring over fantasy maps in books, and learning to read real-world maps as we hiked across the wilderness of Dartmoor. And my fascination with maps has remained strong.

Maps tell of journeys. Adventures. They show us where we've been, where we are, where we might go. They give us direction, a plan, and a world of possibilities.

Cliches about the disabled often fall into 1 of 4 disability tropes: the magical disabled, the evil disabled, the inspirational disabled, and the redemptive disabled.

I had a plan. A perfectly responsible, well-timed, neatly scheduled plan.

And then, the universe laughed.

I was supposed to drive back to North Carolina early Thursday morning. But Wednesday night? I got sick.

Not the “take some Vitamin C and power through” kind of sick. The “this road trip might require a legally questionable amount of cold medicine” kind of sick.

Which left me with two terrible choices:

1️⃣ Get up at 4 AM on Friday and drive while barely functioning.
