While working at Comagine, a healthcare contractor and nonprofit in Portland, Oregon, one of my colleagues shared insights about the challenging conditions faced by the elderly in her native India. (I understand now, and since that comment that India has initiated a new potentially sustainability initiative generally referred to as Modicare). She highlighted the effectiveness of Medicare in the U.S., praising how it supports and honors our seniors. My recent research reaffirmed the stark contrast in elderly care provisions in many countries, where opportunities for the elderly are severely limited. I recall illustrating a scene of an elderly woman in the Philippines being cared for by her daughter, living in a shack by the sea with little assistance other than family. With both my parents now benefiting from Medicare, I see it as a true blessing. Despite the deductions from my paycheck, I willingly contribute to Medicare, knowing it ensures my parents receive the care they need in their later, less healthy years.
